Feels like the First Time

The Macallan 15
Everyone has had their first time… some are memorable, some are life-affirming, and some can make you shed tears of joy.
Regardless, in order to appreciate Scotch, you have to have your first taste. Your first Scotch tasting can help determine your initial palate, and determine whether you will be a Once-And-Done drinker, or a return customer.
My first experience with Scotch was a multi-glass event over a few nights. I remember it like it was yesterday…
Let's take a trip

Let’s take a trip

It was a cold winter night in a small town in Pennsylvania. After being a military escort in a Debutante Ball in New York City a few nights before, I recapped the events with my family. One of the events happened to be an open bar, cocktail party. Without any prior experience with Scotch, I was happy to tell my father that I had tasted two separate (inexpensive) blended Scotches. After I told him that they were very full of flavor, he chuckled and asked if I wanted to try a nice Single Malt. Naturally my curiosity was peaked. We went over to the cabinet, and he revealed his collection of Single Malts from the various regions of Scotland, and briefly explained each. He then grabbed two Glencairn glasses, and a small amount of distilled water. He then reached for a bottle of Macallan 15 year old Single Malt Scotch from the Speyside region. He poured about two fingers worth into each glass, and explained the process (See “Scotch Tasting 101”).

The Nose

Definitely sweet notes with some spice overtones including vanilla.

The Palate

Nice balance of fruit, nuts, and a touch of honey. Caramel/toffee were also present after touching it with some water.

The Finish

Long finish that tapers off with a fruit finish.

Overall

I will be honest. For my first Single Malt Scotch, it was a little much for me to really appreciate. The taste was smooth, and didn’t have any notes of astringency or bitterness.

Hook, Line, and Sinker

As it would suggest, my first taste of Single Malt had me hooked. The complexity of the taste was the first thing that I noticed. I also noticed that for something of this level, you have to appreciate it; you aren’t just drinking it for the sole reason that it has alcohol.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers!
